Summary of the summary
Although the name of the country remains same, today’s Turkey has almost nothing to do with Turkey of only 10 years ago in regards to ideaological, economical and socio-cultural perspectives. This great change is done (is still continuing to be done) by AKP government in fewer than 10 years by the help of the USA to accomplish so-called the Greater Middle East Initiative. When this project will be completed, Turkey will be one of the strongest countries of the world, yet controlled by the USA.
Small history
In the 70s and 80s, the USA stowed their trusted men into Turkish military, Turkish bureaucracy and every other important headquarters and as an ally of the USA, Turkey was perfectly OK with that since he was believed that there was a communist threat ahead. During that period, even though Turkey still used to look like a democratic state where government was elected by society, these guys were the actual rulers of Turkey. They had the enough power to do anything illegal, even for a coup d’état in 1980 because the conflictions between left and right wings were getting out of control, which could cause an inconsistency that could not be tolerated by the USA.
With this coup d’etat, every fanatical action from both left and right wings were suppressed by military. On the other hand, religion was being put forward again against so-called “communist thread”, of course with the approval of the USA. Religious high schools and religious communities at every level were supported both financially and morally. This status quo continued till the collapse of Communism.
What’s happening today and in short-term future?
After the collapse of Communism, the USA changed his policy against middle-east. He announced the Greater Middle East Initiative, which aims to change the unitary structure of Republic of Turkey. This initiative creates an autonomous “Kurdistan” state which is composed of southeastern region of Turkey and some lands from Syria, Northern Iraq and Iran. (Furthermore, in long-term, it also aims to re-unite most of middle east and northern Africa under the governance of Turkey and resurrecting Ottoman Empire so that he could control the transition of energy lines of all Middle-East from one center: Ankara, but this is another topic) It also imposes that Turkey must depend on the USA and international corporations. The way it was done was economy, which will be also explained later. In short, the creation of such a “new Turkey” was essential.
Since the USA has changed his plans, he did not need the guys that he stowed before. In fact, as of then these guys were nothing but obstacles. Of course, these guys were aware of this fact as well. They were also aware of the fact that the USA was trying to convert Turkey into non-independent non-united state. Thus, they organized among themselves to protect the old status quo because for the new plans of USA, the old status quo and its stuff must have gone.
After making all pre-existed national political parties to fall out of favor of society by creating some fake crisis which was controlled by IMF, AKP (which was actually nothing but a fraction of a religious non-secular movement which was being supported after 1980) took the head on the elections of 2002. Without any doubt, they had pretty close relationship with the USA. Thus, they had to help the USA to get rid of old republican guys. Therefore, the operation “Ergenekon” was lauched by AKP government to wipe out everyone from old status quo in every field. Military, bureaucracy, government, private sector etc. Everywhere. Everybody who could be an obstacle against the creation of “new Turkey” has been wiped out by the operation Ergenekon. Unfortunately, those people who jailed by this operation have already done numerous illegal activates (i.e. massacring Kurds and other minorities). Therefore, jailing them did not get the reaction that should have gotten from the public opinion. In other words, these guys dag their own grave.
Actually, this operation still continues and the people of so-called “new Turkey” which is headed by AKP still continues to stow to the untouched areas of old republic where still full of old republican guys exist (i.e. intelligence, military). Meanwhile, this operation is blindly supported by almost all of the intellectuals and communists of Turkey just because of the evil history of arrested people. I am not even talking about the “fans” of AKP government…
Yet, there is one question remains. How could the USA trust AKP that much? How could they make sure that AKP would not change its mind and turns back on the USA after the creation of new Turkey will be completed? The answer is the economy and PKK terrorism. It’s easy to catch the name of Turkey in the “most powerful economies” lists (right now the 16th most powerful in the world I guess, and it is going to be in top 5 in 20 years). However this strength is not based on the production. This is purely based on the collaboration with international multi-national companies. Therefore, if AKP ever decides to make an independent movement, those corporations are going to make him pay off for that. PKK is another weapon that is still being used to threaten and I believe that it is going out of control day by day.
To conclude, Turkey is almost a newbie country now, and it’s growing very fast. Probably, in 20 years, Turkey will be one of the most influential countries in the world and Turkish is going to be one of the most spoken languages of the world just like today’s Russian and Spanish. Yet it will all happen under the command of the USA.
